Photos and Review by

Pros

  • On a stretch of beach near other hotels and bars
  • Large swimming pool with adjacent kiddie pool
  • Whirlpool in an atrium (for a fee)
  • Small but airy and pleasant fitness center
  • Indoor kids' room and outdoor playground
  • Several dining options including a buffet restaurant and pool bar
  • Game area with foosball, pool, and ping pong
  • Paddleboats and other water sports available for rent

Cons

  • Dining room gets crowded
  • Rooms can get noisy at night
  • Fee to use whirlpool beach lounge chairs
  • Wi-Fi works poorly in the rooms
  • Room decor is bland and minimal
  • Swim caps are required in the pool

Bottom Line

This large resort with all-inclusive options is located directly on the beach and a 10-minute drive from the port town of Roquetas de Mar. The 505 rooms here are clean but bland and outdated, with terra cotta floors and cheap-looking laminate furniture. Activities include water sports rentals, a playground, and games, and the food slants towards Spanish cuisine. Note that the sand on this part of the coast is coarse and made of tiny pebbles, but the large pool is a nice alternative.

Oyster Hotel Review

Scene

Large, high-rise resort on the beach popular with Spanish and British tourists

Popular with Spanish families on vacation, Hesperia Sabinal also attracts a large number of travelers from the UK. This seven-story high-rise structure on the beach is surrounded by similarly-sized resorts. The property has a wide, plain marble lobby with plenty of couches and chairs and its doors open directly out onto a seaside promenade. The overall look, however, is dated.

Location

Situated on a seaside promenade leading to the resort town of Roquetas de Mar

Hesperia Sabinal is located directly on the beach, along a stretch of sand that finishes at the port town of Roquetas de Mar on the southeast coast of Spain. The property is bracketed by a series of hotels and cafés along a pedestrian walkway set directly on the beach called Paseo de Mar. The drive from Almeria airport takes about 40 minutes by car or two hours by public transportation.

Rooms

Small and plain, with bamboo flooring or terra cotta tile, laminate furniture, and the occasional piece of artwork

The rooms here are basic and bland, but comfortable enough. The furniture is made of blond laminate wood and there are few attempts at decor beyond the occasional framed print. Most rooms have a balcony; some have decent views. Bathrooms are in need of an update and the grout in some of the rooms is beginning to show its age. All rooms have a small desktop TV and free, but reportedly inconsistent, Wi-Fi. Rooms overlooking the sea and terrace area can be noisy.

Features

A large pool with snack bar next to a smaller children's pool and a small fitness center

The small, sunlit fitness center has a couple of stationary bikes, a rowing machine, a treadmill, and some weights. There is a nominal daily charge for use of the whirlpool. Swim caps are mandatory in the pool and are available for purchase on-site. The restaurant specializes in Spanish food, and consists of three food “islands” with different offerings at each. The hotel also rents out a limited number of paddleboats.
