Bottom Line

The 14-room Hotel Le Fioriere is a small mid-range boutique in the village of Praiano, popular on the Amalfi Coast for its central location. Its a good starting point to visit nearby Positano and other attractions along the coast, though its rooftop terrace that hosts a bar and grill in the evenings gives plenty of reasons to stay on-site. Breakfast is included in a casual lobby lounge bar, and a small parking lot is available too. Rooms are dated and cheaply furnished, but they all have private balconies, and most have sea views. But travelers could compare this property with the nearby Hotel Margherita, which is one of the best hotels in this category, with similar rates and an additional small outdoor pool.

Scene

Small boutique with a casual, romantic atmosphere

Built in 1980, Hotel Le Fioriere has a classic, white Mediterranean architectural style dominated by its balconies. The owner named it after the colorful flowers that are common to the region, which decorate the hotel's eaves. A small lobby with eggshell-blue tile floors and characteristic arches house a small front desk and a lobby bar that doubles as a breakfast room on the ground floor. But some of the striped couches and ceramic lamps in the lobby look like they date back to the hotel's first years. The high point of the hotel is its breezy rooftop terrace which has superb views of the sea, as well as the village of Praiano, and Positano and Capri on the distance. White tables and chairs line the railing facing the sea, with some semicircle booths shaped into the plastered edge of the terrace. In the center, a little water feature has a deep ledge for guests to sit on and dip their legs in. Loungers under white canopies line the back wall, and there's covered table seating for the open-air bar.

Location

On the main road in Praiano, overlooking the sea

Hotel Le Fioriere sits on the cliffs of Praiano, facing west with gorgeous views (especially at sunset) of the Church of San Gennaro's tiled dome, and the Mediterranean. In the distance, guests can see Positano along the coast along with the island of Capri. Easily accessible by car, the hotel is located right off the main road running along the entire Amalfi coast. The downside is that it can be busy on occasion, especially when two buses going in opposite directions meet on the narrow street below. There are a few restaurants within a short walk in either direction, and most of the hotel's neighbors are other hotels. The central Praiano location means that both Amalfi and Positano can be reached in about 15 to 20 minutes by car, while the Naples Airport is within a 90-minute drive. Sorrento, where travelers will find a train station, is a 45-minute drive from the hotel, while Pompeii is about a hour away.

Rooms

Bright, but dated rooms with private furnished balconies

The hotel has only 14 rooms, all with the same celeste floor tiles found throughout the building, matched with navy and sky-blue textiles and artwork in watery blues. For the most part, they have dated white furniture with wood trim, small vanity desks with wicker chairs, and wardrobes. They all have small furnished balconies, most with partial or full sea views, though a few on the first floor have views of the hotel across the street. Free Wi-Fi comes standard along with small flat-screen TVs and iPod docks. There are also minibars, but no coffeemakers. Each Triple Room has a twin bed separated from the rest of the room with a partial wall. Simple, blue-tiled bathrooms have bidets and standard shower/tub combos along with hairdryers and toiletries.

Features

Rooftop terrace shared by an evening alfresco grill restaurant, lounge bar, free breakfast, free parking

The hotel's star attraction is its rooftop terrace, which offers plenty of tables and loungers around a water feature, along with covered seating adjacent to the open-air bar. In the evening, the rooftop turns into the Voce e' Notte (voice of the night) Grill and Sunset Bar, which serves dinner by candlelight. A free continental breakfast buffet is served in the lobby's casual lounge bar, which has additional seating on an outdoor streetside patio. Free parking is included, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
