Bottom Line

The Hotel Nadia is a family-run, budget hotel in Amsterdam's inner canal, in walking distance of such sights as the Anne Frank House and Dam Square. This low-frills property has a reception area and a bright breakfast room with a balcony, plus a free continental breakfast. The 52 cozy, wood-paneled rooms -- some with balconies -- have private bathrooms, mini-fridges, free Wi-Fi, and coffee- and tea-making facilities, but they're not air-conditioned. The hotel has Deluxe Family Rooms with large windows and up to four beds, but Singles can be downright tiny. Many of the other budget options in the vicinity, such as the social Flying Pig Downtown, are hostels with mostly shared rooms.

Scene

Family-run, budget hotel in a historic canal gallery building

The Hotel Nadia is situated in a beautiful 1890 redbrick canal gallery building with arched windows and a turret at the corner. Family run since 1998, the hotel was renovated in 2009. Decor has retained several quirky touches, even if it's a bit dated. The small reception room has wood-paneled walls and a carpeted floor. It's filled with brochures and decorated with Dutch souvenirs like little houses set along shelves. Dark-wood bench seating is finished with dark green pleather cushions and gold nailhead trim. The only other common area is the breakfast room, which is bright and tasteful with wood floors, salmon-colored walls, hanging plants, and vintage pendant lights. The breakfast room opens onto a French balcony, which is filled with plants and offers a great view of the canal and church. Stairs are fairly steep, and the hotel has no elevator, but the friendly staff will help with luggage. This low-frills property is a good budget-friendly alternative to hostels, and draws travelers from across the spectrum, including couples, groups of friends, solo voyagers, and families.

Location

Great location in inner canal ring, with walking distance to major attractions and public transportation

The hotel is located in a corner building along the Keizersgracht in the inner canal ring and Radhuisstraat, which leads to Dam Square. A covered arcade along the street is filled with shops, cafes, and bars. The street is busy with traffic during the day, but is fairly quiet at night. It's an excellent location for exploring the city on foot, with many major attractions nearby including the Anne Frank House (a four-minute walk), Dam Square (an eight-minute walk), the Red Light District (a 10-minute walk), the Flower Market (a 12-minute walk), and Amsterdam Centraal Station (a 16-minute walk). Vondelpark is seven minutes away via public transportation, and the Van Gogh Museum is 14 minutes via public transportation. Schiphol Airports about 40 minutes via public transportation, or a 20-minute drive from the hotel.

Rooms

From tiny Singles to Deluxe Family Rooms; all with en-suite bathrooms, flat-screen TVs, and mini-fridges

Hotel Nadia's 52 rooms range from tiny Singles to Deluxe Family Rooms with four beds. Single Rooms are downright tiny with almost no floor space. The largest Family Rooms have four thin, single beds. Some of the Deluxe Rooms on the canal side of the building have great views of Westerkerk and Keizersgracht. But windows are single glazed, so street-facing rooms may get traffic noise, though the street is much busier during the day than at night. Upgraded rooms may offer canal views, vintage light fixtures, or balconies. Regardless of size, all have large windows, wood-paneled walls, and shelves. Beige-tile bathrooms have walk-in showers, and hairdryers are provided. All rooms include electronic safe boxes, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. Mounted TVs are either tube-style  or flat-screens. Wi-Fi is free, but guests have complained about a spotty signal. Note that rooms are not air-conditioned.

Features

Free continental breakfast in bright breakfast room, and 24-hour reception

Like many other budget hotels, Hotel Nadia is pretty low frills. The cozy breakfast room has a balcony that offers nice views of the canal, and the free continental breakfast includes pastries like croissants. Guests are also given a cold welcome drink on arrival, and the front desk is staffed 24 hours a day. Guests report the staff is helpful, and will store luggage, and arrange for airport shuttles or laundry service. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property, but the signal can be touch and go.
