Bottom Line

Palms City Resort is an upper-middle-range boutique hotel located a five-minute walk from downtown Darwin, near shopping centers, tourist attractions, and great dining and nightlife options. The hotel features a tropical setting and the grounds are lined with palm trees and abundant greenery. On-site facilities include a swimming pool, a breakfast restaurant, a 24-hour lobby, and a coin-operated laundry. Rooms range from minimalist to spacious private bungalows with whirlpools and kitchenettes. All rooms are equipped with modern amenities, like air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and kettles. Although room interiors are somewhat dated and bathrooms are small, the rooms are well maintained and clean. On-site parking is available and Wi-FI is free. As an alternative and more contemporary hotel choice, the H Hotel features superior facilities but a less ideal location.

Scene

A boutique, tropical themed hotel

Palms City Resort is a boutique and modern hotel featuring a tropical theme and clean modern interiors. The exteriors of the hotel are somewhat dated but the facilities are well maintained. One of the hotel's best attributes is the tropical setting. Tall palm trees and thick tropical greenery line the grounds and help to keep it shaded and breezy throughout. The swimming pool is naturally shaped and there are plenty of lounge chairs on the deck for guests to relax on. The only other common area apart from the pool is the ultra modern breakfast restaurant, which features both an indoor and outdoor dining area. The lobby is mainly just a functional place to check in but there are a couple of comfy couches to relax on. The hotel is fairly intimate and the facilities tend to stay quiet and uncrowded most of the time.

Location

Less than a five-minute walk from downtown Darwin, and 15 minutes from the Darwin Wharf Precinct

Palms City Resort is located in downtown Darwin, a short walk from popular restaurants, bars, and shopping centers. Although it's just a short walk from downtown, the hotel is positioned in a quiet area along the Esplanade, across from a public park that overlooks the ocean. Nearby Mitchell Street features some great dining options as well as nightclubs, shopping centers, and grocery stores, plus popular tourist attractions like the Crocosaurus Cove reptile park -- all just within a five- to 10-minute walk from the hotel. Darwin Wharf Precinct takes about 15 minutes to reach on foot. This popular oceanfront area is lined with restaurants, bars, a water park, and a convention center. Mindil Beach features a long white-sand beach and some nice restaurants. A large bi-weekly bazaar is held along Mindil Beach from the months of May to October every year. Usually it takes around 20 minutes to reach the Darwin Airport from the hotel.

Rooms

Rooms are clean and modern; some have kitchenettes and large decks

Palms City Resort offers a variety of room types and a range of prices to suit different budgets. Most of the rooms are clean and modern, plus have plenty of space, natural light, and airflow. Rooms options include standard studio rooms as well as standalone bungalows. Interiors are minimalist and bright, with plain light colored walls, tan wood paneling, and simple modern furniture. The rooms have added warmth from small colorful paintings that hang on the walls, and brightly colored bed runners and throw pillows. Units are outfitted with comfy beds, work desks and chairs, roomy wardrobes, and (in higher room types) balcony seating. Standard amenities include free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, coffee- and tea-making facilities, toiletries, and hairdryers. Also, some higher room types have kitchenettes equipped with electric stoves, microwaves, and cooking utensils.

The Executive Villas, Tropical Villas, and the Garden Bungalows are private and secluded in tropical garden surroundings. The villas and bungalows also have large decks with outdoor seating and barbecue grills. Executive Villas feature outdoor whirlpools. Bathrooms in all room types are cramped, and have just narrow vanities and small walk-in showers.

Features

An outdoor swimming pool, a breakfast restaurant, coin-operated laundry, on-site parking, and free Wi-Fi

The facilities on offer at the Palm City Resort are limited, but sufficient for a hotel in this price range. A favorite feature is the hotel's medium-sized outdoor swimming pool. The pool is freeform and roomy but not long enough to swim a lap. Plenty of lounge chairs are laid out around the pool and there is a barbecue grill for guests to use. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor dining areas, and breakfast is served buffet-style. There is a decent selection of both hot and cold dishes at the buffet, though guests will have to pay an additional fee for breakfast, as is is not included in most room packages. There is a large parking lot on-site and Wi-Fi is free throughout, but some guests report state that the connection isn't strong. Other facilities include coin-operated laundry facilities, and a spacious lobby with comfy seating and a tour desk
