Bottom Line

AYANA Resort and Spa is a four-and-a-half-pearl luxury resort in a scenic cliff-top location overlooking the Indian Ocean. The Jimbaran location is quiet and secluded, and perfect for those needing to recharge without the party scene. The resort takes prime advantage of its oceanfront location, and has a private beach, oceanfront pool, infinity pool, and ocean and sunset views from its cliff-top bar and several restaurants. The resort also features an excellent full-service spa, tennis courts, and putting course. The 290 rooms are superbly decorated in elegantly modern Balinese style, and all come with minibars, free Wi-Fi, iPod docks, and plasma TVs. Travelers who want a luxury hotel in a more central location might consider Le Meridien Bali Jimbaran Hotel, which is closer to Jimbaran's restaurants and bars.

Cliff-top luxury resort on 222 tropical acres, with multiple swimming pools

AYANA Resort sits a spectacular cliff-top setting overlooking the Indian Ocean, secluded from the everyday goings on in Jimbaran, Kuta, and other bustling Bali towns. As such, it's a fine incarnation of the typical image most travelers to Bali have -- peaceful, tropical, exotic, and exclusive. The resort shares a 222-acre (90 hectares) property with its sister resorts RIMBA Jimbaran Bali and Villas at AYANA Resort. The superbly landscaped grounds are lush with trees, gardens, flowers, and wild grasses. Rooms and public spaces are housed in a series of traditional Balinese-style buildings, with well-designed and decorated interiors that make good use of wood and stone, and feature generous displays of local art and artifacts. A private white-sand beach is stunningly picturesque, but it's a bit rocky and the water is a little rough for good swimming. Several outdoor swimming pools are on-site, the highlight of which is a 25-meter infinity pool overlooking the ocean. The resort draws mostly Asian couples and families to its secluded location, superb facilities, and luxury Balinese-style rooms.

Secluded cliff-top location overlooking the Indian Ocean, a 10-minute drive from the Jimbaran Fish Market

AYANA Resort and Spa is in a secluded location on a cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean. While the setting is perfect for peace and quiet, there's almost nothing within an easy walk. It's a 10-minute drive from the Jimbaran Fish Market and an area with a lot of cafes, restaurants, and shops. Garud Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park -- which features iconic statue of the Hindu god Vishnu -- is a 15-minute drive from the resort. New Kuta Green Park, with its water park, bungee jumping, and paintball, is a 20-minute drive away, while the surf-hub of Dreamland Beach is a 25-minute drive away. The center of Kuta is a 25-minute drive from the resort. Kuta features nightlife, shopping malls, and the Ground Zero Monument to the victims of 2002 Sari Club bombing. Ngurah Rai International Airport is also a 25-minute drive from the AYANA Resort.

Spacious and elegant Balinese-style rooms with balconies, some with ocean views

Rooms, suites, and club rooms at AYANA have a luxury feel, with a modern Balinese look that features decorative elements like timber furnishings, batik textiles, and fine art and artifacts. Rooms get good natural light and feature lots of warm browns and tans with pops of soft, bright colors in the soft furnishings. Rooms are all spacious, ranging from 517 square feet (48 square meters) to 1,055 square feet (98 square meters) in size. All come with furnished private balconies, some with views of the Indian Ocean and sunset. Rooms also feature plush beds, coffee/tea makers, minibars, free WiFi, iPod docks, and 42-inch plasma TVs. Suites include living areas, two day beds, four-poster canopy beds, and two full bathrooms. Club Rooms come with private check-in and check-out, access to a club lounge with free meals and beverages, and free laundry and pressing services. Bathrooms are spacious and clad in marble in all categories. All come with premium bath products, rainfall showers, and separate bathtubs

Private beach, several swimming pools, cliff-top bar overall looking the ocean

The AYANA offers an outstanding array of features typical of luxury properties. The private white-sand stretch of Kuba Beach has prime sunset views, but isn't exactly ideal for swimming. The 25-meter outdoor pool has two levels and an infinity edge overlooking the Indian Ocean. The resort also has a lower pool with waterfall; a children's pool with waterslides; a freeform saltwater pool on the beach; and a secluded river stone pool. Drinks and light fare can be enjoyed on the beach and beside several of the pools.

The excellent spa features an open-air seawater therapy pool overlooking the resort's gardens and ocean. The spa offers an wide array of treatments plus yoga and fitness center overlooking the pool. The AYANA also has a great kids' club, plus two lighted tennis courts and an 18-hole, ocean-facing putting course.

The resort's 17 superb dining and drinking venues are highlighted by the cliff-top bar, and featuring a DJ and sunset views. The resort also has an ocean-view steak and seafood grill, pool club with inventive Mexican fare, an oceanfront seafood restaurant, and an indoor open-air Asian restaurant surrounded by terraced lotus ponds. A hot-and-cold breakfast buffet (for a fee) and 24-hour room service are available. Food and beverages are a bit pricey.

The AYANA also offers perfume, batik-making, and cooking classes. While the property is quite large and takes a bit of an effort to walk around, but the resort offers a free shuttle around the property and down to the beach. Guests of the AYANA also enjoy access to the facilities of the AYANA's sister resort, RIMBA Jimbaran Bali
