Bottom Line

Hotel Ca D'Andrean is a charming mid-range option with an almost unbeatable location in the heart of Manarola. The hotel was originally built as a residence and winery in the 1800s, and the original mill is still on display next to the hotel's private garden. Today, the hotel has 10 fresh and contemporary rooms (a welcome modern addition to Cinque Terre) and serves an Italian continental breakfast for a fee. There's a small bar for evening drinks, but little else in the way of public spaces. Most guests (almost all international and Italian tourists) spend their days exploring. It's a five-minute walk to the train station, beach, and trail head from the hotel. For more traditional rooms and a similar location, check rates at the nearby La Torretta Hotel

Oyster Hotel Review

Historic home and winery turned hotel, run by the Italian owner

Hotel Ca D'Andrean was built as a residence and winery in the 1800s, and some of the original architecture and artifacts remain. For instance, there's a stone mill, olive oil making equipment, and a stone fireplace. Guests enter through a dark stone entrance, into the small lobby, and stairs lead up to the guest rooms. Breakfast can be enjoyed in a charming nook decorated with brick details and vintage photographs. The adjacent garden is set with white patio furniture and filled with lemon trees and flowers. Other than the dining spaces and a small seating area near the reception desk, the hotel doesn't have any public spaces. Guests are a mixture of couples and families, nearly all of them are tourists. The hotel is operated by the Italian owner and he's usually on hand to make dinner reservations, provide train timetables, and answer questions.

Across the street from a focacceria in the pedestrian village of Manarola

Hotel Ca D'Andrean has a walkable and convenient location in the heart of Manarola. Cars are not allowed into the village, so if you arrive with one you'll have to park it in the lot (for a cost) or on the road (for free) directly outside of the village, then walk in. It's a little less than a mile and mostly downhill to the hotel's front door from the parking lot. On the way, you'll pass an idyllic stream, church bell tower, and gorgeous ocean views. Just across the street is a focacceria and a sporting goods store. It's another five minutes on foot downhill to the water, train, and trail head. The small village is definitely charming, but it does get super crowded with day trippers who arrive by boat and train. Crowds tend to thin out in the evenings. Pisa International Airport is about an hour and 20 minutes away. Genoa Airport is just under two hours, and it's about two hours and 20 minutes to Florence.

Surprisingly fresh and contemporary

You wouldn't guess it from the hotel's traditional facade and public spaces, but the 10 rooms in Ca D'Andrean are bright and contemporary thanks to a renovation in 2014. Design is similar across the board. Expect cement-style floors, bold wallpaper, and whitewashed wood paneling. Modern furniture includes a fun desk chair, ottoman, and bright orange throw pillows. Built-in closet organizers provide space for storing and hanging items. All rooms feature a mini-fridge, free Wi-Fi, safe, and a flat-screen TV. Spacious bathrooms have showers, toiletries, and wall-mounted hairdryers. Some rooms have a furnished balcony overlooking the street, and others have access to the charming garden. Note that families should book a Triple Room, as all other rooms are double occupancy. Cribs are not available.

Italian continental breakfast, lovely garden, and free Wi-Fi

Features at this historic boutique hotel are quite limited as most guests spend their time exploring Cinque Terre. There's an Italian continental breakfast buffet that mostly includes sweet items like pastries, yogurt, and fresh coffee -- but it costs extra. Guests can also order from a small selection of wines, beers, and aperitifs for drinks in the garden. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. Staff is generally available to answer questions and provide directions.
