Oyster Hotel Review

Luxurious hotel with regal architecture and interiors set on expansive, beautiful grounds

This five-pearl hotel impresses with its palatial architecture, opulent interiors, and stunning grounds replete with peacocks, beautiful gardens, and pretty fountains. Splendid courtyards, terraces, pools, and vast lawns abound, and there is plenty to admire across this regal lakeshore expanse: elephant statues spout water into checker-tiled pools, bougainvillea drapes across cream-colored buildings, and lantern-lit paths meander past flower-filled gardens. The property is set on over 50 acres, 20 of which are composed of a wildlife sanctuary with various animals like deer and wild boar.

Many guests arrive here by boat, and following a welcoming shower of rose petals, get whisked across the extensive grounds to the lobby via golf cart. This decadent space is centered around a golden dome that looms over a grand chandelier and a trickling fountain. Decor-wise, the property is full of luxurious details, teeming with grand arches and domes, marble floors, fine furnishings, and traditional art and artifacts like paintings, swords, and shields that add a touch of local history. With some of the priciest rates in the city, clientele here is an international set of well-heeled travelers -- mainly on vacation, though it's a fine choice for business travelers as well.

Lakeshore location within a 15-minute drive of top tourist sites

The hotel is located on the shores of Lake Pichola in Udaipur, which is home to several other high-end hotels. There are a handful of dining options and shops within walking distance. One of the city's top attractions, the City Palace, is about a 10- to 15-minute drive away, as are other tourist sites, like Jagdish Temple and the Bagore Ki Haveli Museum. The train station is about a 20-minute drive away. Udaipur Airport can be reached in around 40 minutes.

Spacious, refined rooms with marble bathrooms; some suites have private pools

Rooms at the Oberoi Udaivilas are some of the largest in the city, ranging between 600- and 2650-square-feet (56-to 246-square-meters). Room decor is stylish and refined, with fine dark wood furnishings that include two-poster beds and writing desks. Turquoise and orange pillows look a bit off-brand against mostly neutral hues, but traditional applique quilts cover beds and patterned area rugs adorn the floors. Rooms have lovely bay window seating as well as sofas. Luxury Suites feature separate living rooms, dining rooms, powder rooms, and private courtyards. Some also have large private outdoor pools with sitting areas and sunbeds. Kohinoor Suites with gold domed ceilings, indoor and outdoor courtyards, and large outdoor private pools with lovely sitting areas are the largest and most luxurious option.

Standard amenities include large flat-screen TVs, DVD players, iPod docks, espresso machines, electric kettles, minibars, electronic safes, and free high-speed Wi-Fi. Other thoughtful perks include daily fresh fruit and flowers.

White marble bathrooms have Victorian freestanding tubs as well as separate showers, plus they have vanity areas with magnifying mirrors and the hotel's own brand of high-end toiletries.

Two attractive outdoor pools, two elegant restaurants and a bar, spa and fitness center, plus various activities

Features here are as luxurious as the grounds and rooms. There are two restaurants on-site. An elegant restaurant with a lovely outdoor area serves Indian and Western fare for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and a candlelit fine-dining restaurant is open for dinner and offers traditional live music. There's also an elegant bar. A number of dining experiences are available, such as cooking classes with the chef and private lakeside dinners. The hotel also offers a variety of activities, including tours, boat excursions, craft classes, and a number of activities geared at kids.

There are two attractive outdoor pools. The 89-foot (27-meter) main pool offers chic loungers shaded by colorful parasols, and it's illuminated by flaming torches at night. There's also a spa pool, which is accessible to guests over 12-years-old. Wellness features include a luxurious spa that offers a wide menu of treatments, as well as a modern fitness center that offers a solid selection of cardio and strength-training machines. Yoga classes are available. The grounds are also home to a volleyball court, croquet lawn, and a putting area. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
