Bottom Line

This value property has 17 clean rooms with ice cold air-conditioning and is within a four-minute drive of the ferry terminal, but not on the beach. Studios and Suites feature basic wet bar kitchenettes, and all rooms come with mini-fridges, balconies, and small flat-screen TVs. The free breakfast is minimal but welcomed, and guests like the rooftop plunge pool's 360-degree views across the island. There's also a small second small pool, free Wi-Fi, and on-site golf cart rentals. For slightly bigger rooms with whirlpool tubs and a bar, compare rates at the three-pearl Villas Coco Resort.

Scene

Value spot that's popular with families and older couples

Chac Chi Hotel & Suites is a value property through and through. Expect a concrete building with weathered wood plank stairs and tile floors. Tropical landscaping adds a nice touch. The property opened in 2007 and it doesn't look like much updating has gone down since. There's no denying that it's dated and simple, but it has a certain charm and the vibe is relaxing. Its central island location is good for folks with rented golf carts who want to explore the whole island, or get away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy downtown area. Typically, guests are small families or older couples from the United States and Canada.

Location

Centrally located on the island without too much within walking distance

Chac Chi Hotel & Suites is located a four-minute drive from the ferry port, in the island's residential central area. Guests should be prepared to rent a golf cart or have a taxi budget for getting around. Less than a handful of restaurants are within walking distance, but there's a tiny Six convenience store directly adjacent to the hotel selling beer and liquor, soft drinks, and candy. A large Chedraui superstore, where guests can find everything from sunscreen to sun-dried tomatoes, can be reached within a six-minute walk. Both the ferry port and downtown are about a four-minute taxi journey north, while the island’s popular Ice Bar and Turtle Farm are a 10-minute drive south. Dolphin Discovery Isla Mujeres is about a 20-minute drive away.

Rooms

Simple and dated room with ice cold air-conditioning and some kitchenettes

There’s nothing fancy in any of the 17 rooms at Chac Chi Hotel & Suites. Rooms are clean, though there’s mold on the doors and a slight mildew smell in most rooms -- typical on the island. The wood furniture is dated, the locks use metal keys, and gaps around doors and glass-slatted windows allow noise and conversation to flow freely between rooms. Beds are either configured as one king, matrimonial doubles, or individual doubles. All rooms are stocked with small wall-mounted flat-screen TVs with cable channels, a small mini-fridge, free Wi-Fi, and digital safe. There’s no free drinking water in the rooms, but glasses can be filled via the water jug downstairs by the pool.

Studios are basically Standard Rooms with a wet bar kitchenette area, while Suites have a separated kitchen area with a dining room table and wet bar kitchen area with a larger mini-fridge, hot plate, microwave, toaster, and coffeemaker. There's a meager collection of plates and cups if you can find them in the drawers.

Tiled bathrooms feature basic toiletries and walk-in showers with older showerheads. Furnished balconies or terraces either overlook the street or the pool.

Features

On-site golf cart rental, two outdoor pools, and a free light breakfast

As a budget hotel, features here are slim. Guests can grab a 360-degree view of the island from the rooftop pool area, though it’s realistically more like a large plunge pool. A few worn, stretched plastic lounger chairs and mismatched metal and wood patio furniture are the only seating up there. There’s also a small pool in the center of the hotel behind reception, and a deck with a few white plastic chairs. A free continental breakfast is served poolside and includes some fresh fruit, yogurt, coffee, juice, and cereal. During our visit the free Wi-Fi continually needed us to log back in every few minutes. Third-party golf cart rentals are available on-site, and there’s limited free parking right out front of the hotel.
