Bottom Line

Next to the Piazza del Popolo and the Villa Borghese, in the heart of Rome, the 78-room Hotel Valadier is a lovely, classic-meets-modern stay aimed at tourists and business travelers alike. Higher-tier rooms are more up-to-date than others, but all evoke a Baroque elegance in their style; all have amenities such as free Wi-Fi and small flat-screen TVs, as well as marble bathrooms with walk-in rainfall showers. Some rooms have jetted tubs and balconies overlooking the city, but others are small and have a musty odor. There's an extensive free breakfast, and the hotel is home to three restaurants -- one with a rooftop terrace -- and a piano bar. In addition to several conference rooms, there's a business center and free Wi-Fi.

Oyster Hotel Review

This boutique hotel with a nautical style caters to both tourists and business travelers.

In a renovated 17th-century townhouse in the heart of Rome, the Hotel Valadier has an eccentric, cruise ship-inspired style and welcoming atmosphere. A large chandelier hangs in the entrance, where dresses and marble statues are on display. The small lobby is rather dark, decorated with black leather chairs, modern artwork that evokes classical themes, marble tile floors, potted plants, and even a disco ball; coffee and tea are available at all hours. The cozy lobby piano bar feels very old-world, with dark wood paneling, green marble floors, a green marble bar, and black leather chairs. Up at the rooftop restaurant, HI-RES, panoramic views of Rome are paired with frosted glass tables, a metal roof, white couches, and potted plants. The HI-RES bar has a stainless steel countertop and tall white bar chairs. This lounge area doubles as the breakfast area and has wood floors and brown couches. Although the restaurants are stylish and bright, most of the common areas have no natural light and are dimly lit.

Prime central location close to the Piazza del Popolo and Villa Borghese, and within walking distance of many sights

The Hotel Valadier is located on a cobbled street in the Campo Marzio neighborhood in the heart of Rome. The Villa Borghese, Piazza del Popolo, Santa Maria del Popolo, Pincio Terrace, and Altar of Peace (Ara Pacis) are all within a stone's throw of the hotel, and other major sights like the Pantheon, Piazza di Spagna, Spanish Steps, and Trevi Fountain are only marginally farther. Upscale shops, restaurants, and public transportation are all within walking distance. Both the Leonardo da Vinci International Airport and Ciampino Airport are a 30-minute drive away.

Individually styled rooms have wood features and marble bathrooms; some come with balconies with city views.

Rooms at the Hotel Valadier range in size and style, some feeling more modern and recently updated than others. Some have wood-paneled ceilings and vintage furniture, while others have contemporary furnishings. All are done in earth tones, leaning heavily on blues and tans. However, some are more clean-lined and modern, with hardwood floors, while others have retro, patterned wallpaper and tiled floors.

Suites come with extra space and seating, in the form of Chesterfield-style sofas, and some rooms have private balconies overlooking the city. Each room comes with a minibar, air-conditioning, and a flat-screen TV with a free Mediaset Premium package. Suites also have bathrobes and slippers, as well as tea and coffee facilities. All bathrooms are rather modern, done completely in marble, with walk-in rainfall showers and signature toiletries; most only have showers, but suites also have jetted tubs. It's worth noting that some rooms have a musty odor while others lack ample space.

Free breakfast buffet, three restaurants (one with rooftop terrace), lobby piano bar, meeting/event spaces, and business center

The extensive free breakfast buffet includes cereal, yogurt, meats, cheeses, baked goods, fruit, coffee, and juices. There are three restaurants at this hotel: HI-RES, on the rooftop, which serves traditional Roman cuisine alongside a list of over 400 wines; Il Brillo Parlante, which serves wood-fired pizza and grilled entrees (it also has a wine bar); and Valentino, which offers a mixture of modern and traditional Italian dishes. The lobby lounge is an atmospheric piano bar with live music and cocktails. The small business center has a PC and Apple computer, each with its own printer. Room service and concierge services are offered, and the hotel is pet-friendly, but only medium-sized dogs and cats are allowed.
