Bottom Line

Hotel Bernini Bristol is an elegant, upscale hotel on Piazza Barberini, just a 10-minute walk from Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. The hotel has a pretty restaurant with panoramic views and a large terrace, as well as a small spa and a fitness center. Breakfast comes with some room rates, but earns mixed reviews. The 127 guest rooms are spacious and range from contemporary to classically decorated, and have thoughtful touches like generous amenity kits, bathrobes, and turndown service. They're not quite up to advertised five-star standards, however. Wi-Fi is free, but it can be spotty. Guests should compare rates with the more luxurious Boscolo Exedra, which is located on Piazza della Repubblica and offers a seasonal infinity pool.

Oyster Hotel Review

Upscale hotel with elegant drinking and dining spaces

With marble floors and sparkling chandeliers, Hotel Bernini Bristol has a grand, opulent feeling throughout its rooms and common areas. Part of the SLH group of boutique properties around the world, the hotel resides in a building constructed in 1873, which was totally razed and rebuilt in 1939, and today is a seven-story structure of clay-colored stone on the cobblestone Piazza Barberini. Inside, the small front desk can be quite busy with the number of guests the hotel receives -- typically couples on romantic Roman holidays, along with significantly fewer families and business travelers. There’s a small, vintage-inspired bar in a classic parlor decorated with a warm mural and velvety chairs and couches in shades of red and orange. The top-floor restaurant is a gorgeous white space with whimsical chairs featuring prints of superheroes and cherubs. Outside, there’s a huge, covered terrace where guests can dine or enjoy a decadent dessert like hazelnut profiteroles while taking in the gorgeous views.

The hotel's grandeur is a little faded in places, however, and the hotel doesn't quite live up to five-star standards.

In historic piazza within short walk to famous sights

Hotel Bernini Bristol is located on the historic Piazza Barberini with Bernini’s Triton Fountain. It’s within a 10-minute walk to the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain, and within a 25-minute walk to the Colosseum. The Pantheon can be reached on foot in under 20 minutes. There are plenty of restaurants and shops within a short walk, and the Vatican is around a 15-minute drive. Leonardo da Vinci Airport is around a 40-minute drive, and Ciampino Airport is around a 30-minute drive.

Spacious rooms with elegant or modern decor

Some rooms at Hotel Bernini Bristol have a pretty, vintage feel with matching distressed bedroom sets and decorative wallpaper and curtains in colors like blue and gold. More modern rooms are also available with sleek furnishings, white walls, and minimal decor. All rooms have plasma TVs with satellite channels, minibars, safes, robes, turndown service, and free Wi-Fi, though some guests complain the Wi-Fi is spotty. Bathrooms are made of Italian marble and have thoughtful touches like makeup mirrors, generous amenity kits, and bathrobes; some rooms have shower/tub combos, while others have separate tubs and stall showers. The Suite we visited had a huge terrace with an umbrella and several chairs to relax in and take in the impressive views. Some rooms are subject to noise from a bar with live music located across the street. The air-conditioning isn't always strong enough for some guests.

Panoramic restaurant with terrace, free spa, and fitness center

The hotel has a lobby bar, open daily until midnight, and a pretty top-floor restaurant serving lunch and dinner from Monday to Saturday with panoramic city views and a huge, covered terrace for al fresco dining. A buffet breakfast is included with some rates. There’s a fitness center with weight machines and cardio equipment including three treadmills. There’s also a spa with a Turkish bath, sauna, and whirlpool that’s included in room rates. Massages are available for a fee. The hotel has seven meeting rooms for private events, the largest accommodating up to 100 guests.
