The mid-range Crockett Hotel has been a downtown San Antonio landmark since it opened next to the Alamo back in 1909. Its location makes it a great base for exploring the famous River Walk and its many dining and nightlife options. The 138 rooms are clean and comfortable, but can vary greatly in size -- some are plain tiny. Highlights include an excellent free hot breakfast, a popular bar, a outdoor pool, and an impressive brick atrium. Guests also get free access to amenities at the upper-middle-range sister property across the street (The Menger Hotel), which has a larger pool, a fitness center, and a spa. However, as rates are comparable at The Menger, travelers may prefer just staying there instead.
Originally opened in 1909 and expanded in 1927, the Crockett holds considerable historic charm and appeal. Adjacent to the registration desk is a small platform with handsome leather furniture below a bank of two-story floor-to-ceiling windows. The lobby has polished tile floors and original brick walls, and there's a piano and several potted plants in the space. From here, it opens up to a bright, usually quiet seven-story atrium surrounded by guest rooms. San Antonio’s famous River Walk and the Alamo attract visitors from around the world, and many choose to stay at the Crockett due to its proximity to both attractions. It also gets some business travelers, owing to its central downtown location.
Location is one of the biggest selling points of the Crockett Hotel. It's located on the Alamo battlefield grounds, in an area with plenty of historic attractions, shopping, and nightlife -- ideal for tourists that want to join the throngs of people strolling down the River Walk or sightseeing.

Pleasant (if generic) rooms with Keurig coffeemakers, some with Alamo views
Rooms vary greatly in size at the Crockett, and some of the entry-level units, such as the Cozy Queens, can feel cramped. Decor varies a bit, but most rooms have pale color palettes and Mission-style wood furniture. They're entirely pleasant, if a bit unremarkable, but plantation shutters add an atmospheric touch. All rooms have 32-inch flat-screen TVs and Keurig coffeemakers, and robes and mini-fridges are free upon request. Bathrooms have tiling and shower/tub combos, plus acrylic vanity areas with some counter space. Some rooms offer terrific views of the Alamo and city skyline, while others overlook the hotel’s inner courtyard.
Access to facilities at sister hotel, plus small outdoor pool, popular bar, and meeting space
This historic hotel features several attractive amenities, but it also benefits from having its sister property, The Menger Hotel, across the street. For example, the Crockett doesn’t have a fitness center, but its guests get free access to the Menger’s cardio equipment and free weights. The outdoor pool at the Crockett is small and unheated, but guests have access to The Menger’s larger outdoor pool, which is heated year-round. Massages and treatments also are available at The Menger's Alamo Spa.
In terms of dining, the Crockett serves an excellent free breakfast with eggs and breakfast meats, and room service is available through The Menger’s restaurant for lunch and dinner. The Crockett also has a bar, Ernie’s Bar, with good happy hour drink deals and plenty of local regulars. Rooms service is available as well.
Business facilities include a PC and a printer in the lobby and multiple meeting spaces, including the Alamo Room, which can hold up to 70 people. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Other features include dry cleaning and laundry services and valet and self-parking (both for a fee). Pets are also welcome for an extra fee.
